Mass Media


The media or the mediums are means by which something is done. The mass media are the means by which information’s are carried to the people all over the world. Today, the newspapers, the television, the radio and the Cinema make up the mass media. Nowadays people are very much interested in knowing what is going on in each and every part of the globe. They are affected by such happenings. So they naturally look for them through mass media.

Today the newspaper is an important medium of mass communication. Newspapers provide us with the least news from all over the world. They keep us informed about the happenings in the political, social, educational and other fields. They serve as an educator of the public. They reflect the public opinion freely. They publish educative articles which are of great value. They voice forth the grievances of the public to the Government. The advertisements help us to buy or sell things. Secondly, the radio gives us news faster than the newspapers. It links all parts of the world. The radio broadcasts programmes for all types of people such as farmers, writers, businessmen, children and women. Really, all of us are educated and entertained through the Radio programmes. Next, the TV renders invaluable service in the field of education. Educational programmes specially prepared by experts are telecast. They are instructive and informative. Besides, they give special programmes on health, hygiene and other fields. Live telecasts of games like cricket, debates in parliament are very interesting to watch. Thus, the TV as a powerful medium appeals both to the eye and the ear.

The cinema like the TV is a powerful audio visual aid. Many good films are screened today. Besides entertaining the people, they teach morals and other values of life. Similarly, the TV and the cinema spoil the young minds today to some extent. They show scenes of violence, robbery etc. They influence the young boys in the wrong way. Today some pupils keep on watching the TV and the cinema and forget reading and homework. But this disadvantages, the mass media have become essential in our daily life.
